Both teams were at the top of the world football at the time; Juventus was the base team of the Italian National Team that won the 1982 FIFA World Cup played in Spain and was the current champions of Coppa Italia and current runners-up of the Italian Serie A and the European Champions Cup, doing it's pre-season to the new 1983-84 european season after the end of the 1982-83 competitions while Peñarol was the current champions of the Uruguayan Championship, Copa Libertadores (South American championship) and the European/South American Cup being the base team of the Uruguayan National Team that didn't qualify to the 1982 FIFA World Cup but won the Copa América at the end of that year and was doing it's pre-season to face the second half of the 1983 Uruguayan Championship (finally won by it's arch-rival Nacional de Uruguay) and the last two matchdays of the Copa Libertadores triangular semi-finals (beating it's arch-rival and advanced to the final being defeated by Grêmio FBPA the 1982 brazilian runners-up who won they first continental title).
