Copa Libertadores 1998

Information

The winner of this Libertadores would play against Real Madrid for the title of world champion, but this match meant much more than that for these 2 clubs. Barcelona was representing the dream of Ecuador football fans to see a local club winning the most important South American title. Los Amarillos had some Ecuadorian legends that took part in the golden age of Ecuadorian football (more specifically the first time that they were in a World Cup in 2002) like Cevallos, Gómez, Agustín Delgado (also a key piece in the historical campaign of the 2006 WC) and Asencio. Barcelona featured more players that marked an era for Ecuador in the 1990s like Quiñónez (a key starter for Vasco da Gama in 1989 as well), Capurro and Carabalí. The most famous Torero player at the time, though, was Ántony de Ávila "El Pitufo" ("The Smurf"). He was an América de Cali and Colombian legend, playing in two World Cups (1994 and 1998). Vasco da Gama was in its centennial year and winning the Libertadores Cup for the first time ever would mean the pinnacle of that historical year. Vascão's archrival, Flamengo, already had a Libertadores title and was the only Rio-de-Janeiro-based team with it, another good reason to add importance to this competition. The Gigante da Colina featured one of the best Brazilian defenders of all time, Mauro Galvão, a trio of wonderkids consisting of Pedrinho, Felipe and Juninho Pernambucano (the latter would be one of the best Brazilian players ever), the always hard-working and deadly striker Luizão (a member of the 2002 WC Brazil National Team), the Vasco legend Carlos Germano (a member of the 1998 Brazil National Team), the fast Donizete "Pantera", and the fan favourite Odvan.
