Barely three months after the Munich air disaster, Manchester United managed to put together a team to compete in the Cup Final. They only fielded four crash survivors, along with several newcomers. Only two players from United's previous year's final against Aston Villa featured in this match; six of them passed away in the crash (along with two others who had not played), two never played again due to the injuries, while another had not yet fully recovered. In particular, Bobby Charlton was so affected by the crash that he decided not to play again, especially after the death of his friend Duncan Edwards. However, he later changed his mind and went on to become the cornerstone of the team that was to come in the 1960s. Bolton, for their part, were back in the final after playing the famous Matthews final five years earlier. Only two Bolton players from that final started this match.
