Czechoslovakia began its journey in the 1994 World Cup qualification phase still as a unified country, just as it had been since the 1930s. Although de facto the country no longer existed (it was now called the Czech and Slovak Federative Republic), for some months before the actual separation, the still existing Czechoslovak football federation was forced by the international organizations to play the remaining matches under the above name against Wales, Romania, the Faroe Islands and Cyprus. After this qualification and ahead of the Euro 1996 qualifying round, the Czech and the Slovak Republics started competing as independent countries.
